5 things to know about Kamala Sohonie 1. In 1939, Kamala Sohonie became the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in a scientific field, breaking barriers at a time when women in science were underrepresented. She was the first woman to lead the Royal Institute of Science in Bombay, and her work on "Neera" earned her the Rashtrapati Award.

She studied chemistry and physics at Bombay University, where her parents were chemists, and she graduated first in her class in 1933.

Not only did her remarkable competence dispel any doubts, but it also resulted in an increase in the number of women accepted into the program.

4. Sohonie was awarded a research scholarship at Cambridge University, where she made the significant discovery that all plant cells contain Cytochrome C, an enzyme necessary for the production of energy. She wrote her PhD thesis on this finding in just 14 months.

5. Sohonie spent her time upon her return to India researching the nutritional advantages of specific foods and contributed to the creation of the cost-effective Neera dietary supplement.
